This was taken at the "Homeplace," as it was simply called by family; the homestead farm of my greatgrandparents. My grandfather was born in this house. These photographs were taken standing on the outside of the house looking in. There were only minor shards of glass left in the windows. The series of photographs I took on this visit centered on openings, though I hadn't set out with any such objective.
If abandoned farmsteads intrigue you, I highly suggest the PBS documentary Death of the Dream: Farmhouses in the Heartland. I didn't know it at the time, but the series of photographs I took this day are among the last photographs taken of the Homeplace. The land was sold, and the buildings- the handbuilt barn and silo, the house, the outbuildings- no longer exist.
